Then, they use what they know about the character’s to create a six-word memoir from the characters point-of-view. To do this, students analyze a character from the text. Not only do I use the six-word memoirs to get to know my students, but I also use it as a writing activity for characterization. These types of questions allow the students to dig deeper into themselves, and thus it helps them create a remarkable six-word memoir. The questions on the planning sheet ask for descriptions of their character from their point-of-view and that of others, for specific memories that helped shaped who they are, and for what they see themselves becoming in the future. Next, I give students a planning sheet so that they can brainstorm different ideas that would be useful when writing their six-word memoir. I then proceed to show them examples written by teens to demonstrate that they too have a story to tell. With this example, students learn that to write a six-word memoir they must be clear, honest, and tell a story. Some questions I ask are: Why is the narrator selling the shoes? Did the child merely go barefoot or was he never able to walk? Is the story about the end of childhood or the end of parenthood? Is this quote about failure, loss, both, or something else? He answered, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” I like to introduce this quote to the students to begin a discussion of six-word memoirs.Īfter introducing the quote to the students and allowing them time to soak it in, I ask questions to get them thinking. One famous example is that of Ernest Hemingway who is said to have been challenged to write a novel in six words. What I’ve found most useful is showing students some examples before turning them loose to write their six-word memoir. The six-word memoir website has helpful handouts to use in the classroom. To introduce the students to the assignment, you should first explain what a six-word memoir is. Because this is an introspective activity, you can get to know your students on a deeper level than a tired first day of school activity like a round robin of questions or an acoustic poem. One useful way to integrate the six-word memoir into the classroom is to utilize it as a get-to-know-you activity on the first day of school.
